Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
In order to understand your plan, it’s important to know these common terms that you’ll hear:
Maximum: Your maximum is a capped-off amount that your insurance company will pay for your treatment over the course of a year.
Deductible: A deductible is the set amount of money that your insurance provider will require you to pay out-of-pocket before your benefits kick in and cover treatment.
Premium: Your premium is the monthly or annual amount that you pay for dental insurance coverage.
What Your Dental Insurance Covers
It’s important to keep in mind that every dental insurance plan differs, and you’ll need to directly contact your provider to learn whether a certain treatment is covered or not. However, most companies determine coverage based on a 100-80-50 structure. This means that they typically cover 100 percent of the cost of preventive care, like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of basic treatments, like cavity fillings, and 50 percent of more serious procedures, like tooth extractions.
